Lots of events to report on this week!
The San Diego Jewish Film Festival is underway with both live and virtual screenings. The festival wraps up on the 20th.
Current theatrical offerings include: On Her Shoulders We Stand at Bread and Salt, Trouble in Mind at the Old Globe, Ad(mission)s at Onstage Playhouse in Chula Vista, El Borracho opened yesterday at the Old Globe, and Abigail's Party at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center.
Today (Friday) there will be an art exhibition opening at San Diego State for works by Nigerian artist Bruce Onobrakpeya. There is also an opening for works by Minerva Cuevas at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego. The Center for World Music SK Kakraba concert at the Mingei is, unfortunately, sold out. Friday and Saturday Cinema Under the Stars will screen One Night in Miami.
Tomorrow (Saturday) at the San Diego Central Library there will be a talk by Richard Foss on the Lost Cuisines of California. Saturday and Sunday the House of China will hold a Chinese New Year Celebration. Also, Saturday and Sunday, the Worldbeat Center will hold a Black Comix Day event.
Sunday, the final performance of the opera Così fan tutte (The School for Lovers) will take place at the Civic Center Theatre.
Monday, a discussion African Americans: Past, Present, Future will take place at Boulevard Hall.
Tuesday, the Oceanside International Film Festival will kick off with film screenings and other special events continuing until the following Sunday.
Thursday, the San Diego Italian Film Festival will virtually screen Michelangelo – Infinito (Michelangelo – Endless). Camarada will present Tango Obsessed at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. The San Diego Museum of Art will offer a virtual lecture on the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. The San Diego World Affairs Council distinguished speaker series will feature Corinne E. Goria who will give a talk on Global storytelling for Social Justice. Mexican rock band Los Daniels will perform at the Music Box. Warwick's will host Kerri Maher as she discusses and signs her new book, The Paris Bookseller.
Next Friday, the Irish quintet Goitse will perform two shows at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. Next Friday and Saturday, Cinema Under the Stars will screen the film House of Gucci. The three-day San Diego Mardi Gras will take place on Friday, Saturday and the following Tuesday.
Next Saturday, a trio of events will take place at the Worldbeat Center, including the Black Art Matters Art Exhibition and Competition, a BIPOC Community Circle and, on both Saturday and Sunday, there will be a Tribute to the Reggae Legends Festival. The San Diego Museum of Art’s lecture From Forts and Palaces: Paintings Made for the Rajputs will be presented. Island Mist and Dingeman Elementary B9ers will perform at the International Cottages. The Chinese Historical Museum will offer a lecture on the book The Red Bishop. Noche de Cumbia featuring Los Sleepwalkers, La Diabla, Cumbia Machin & Viejo Lowbo will take place at the Quartyard. The Museum of Making Music will present a concert by David Castañeda. The El Cajon Elks Lodge will hold a Mardi Gras Celebration.
Rounding out our calendar is the Los Cardenales de Nuevo Leon concert at the Pala Events Center on Sunday.
